McMahon Publishing Group

McMahon Publishing Group was founded in 1972 by Raymond E. McMahon, when he left Medical Economics after a 10-year career. McMahon Publishing Group has grown to become one of the nation’s largest family-owned medical publishers with a projected 2005 annual revenue of about $32 million across all product categories.

Today, McMahon publishes a broad array of monthly medical newsmagazines in various specialties including anesthesiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, hospital and retail pharmacy, neuropsychiatry and pain medicine. McMahon publications are at or near the top of their markets in independent readership scores. The combined circulation of McMahon Publishing Group publications approaches 500,000 doctors and pharmacists.

Foremost among McMahon publications is Anesthesiology News. Founded 31 years ago, Anesthesiology News has grown to become the best-read publication in the field according to PERQ/HCI, and has remained No. 1 for the past 10 years. Every month, 94% of the 40,000 U.S.-based anesthesiologists read some or all of this publication.

The mission of Anesthesiology News is threefold: to improve the quality of anesthesia care, to increase its cost-effectiveness and to facilitate the job of the anesthesiologist.

To achieve these goals, the editorial staff of Anesthesiology News work to follow developments in the field, both in the academic and private practice settings. The majority of Anesthesiology News’ coverage comes from major anesthesia meetings. The magazine reports on 10 to 15 meetings each year including the annual meetings of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the PostGraduate Assembly of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Ambulatory Anesthesia, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology, and the Society for Technology in Anesthesia.

Besides news coverage of major meetings, Anesthesiology News also publishes a range of feature and educational articles. These include our PreAnesthetic Assessment continuing medical education series, edited and directed by Elizabeth Frost, MD, Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City. This series is often cited by readers as one of the most important aspects of the publication. Thanks to Dr. Frost’s dedication, the PreAnesthetic Assessment series is currently in its 21st year.

McMahon Publishing Group also publishes a wide variety of special editions, which are compendia of educational reviews written by thought leaders in various specialties. These include cardiology, hospital pharmacy, infectious disease, neuropsychiatry, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, gastroenterology and endoscopy, and primary care medicine.

The Special Projects division of McMahon Publishing Group produces educational reviews, wall charts and custom pocket guides, and Special Reports and Literature Reviews. The educational reviews, written by authorities in a given treatment area, are comprehensive summaries of state-of-the-art thinking on a specific disease state. These are often published as wall charts and pocket guides that serve as on-the-spot educational tools for healthcare providers.

Special Reports are individual custom-written publications that are bound inside Anesthesiology News or other McMahon publications. Special Reports can be based on symposium coverage, interviews with experts, the medical literature and any combination of these. Special Reports can be CME/CE accredited.

Literature Reviews are also individual custom-written publications that are bound inside Anesthesiology News or other McMahon publications and distributed to the magazine’s full readership. We conduct a literature search for all peer-reviewed, published studies on a given subject and compile a detailed, scientifically sound review of these articles. Literature Reviews can also be CME/CE accredited.

The McMahon Publishing Group Web site, mcmahonmed.com, has grown significantly and now contains a wealth of medical information gleaned from McMahon’s print publications. CMEZone.com is an additional Web-based resource that provides free continuing medical education, continuing pharmacy education and continuing education for nurses.
