Nerve Injury Rare in Knee Surgery With Regional Techniques
ISSUE: AUGUST 2010
Peripheral nerve injury after total knee arthroplasty with regional anesthesia is rare and occurs no more frequently in patients undergoing lower extremity peripheral nerve block than in those who undergo general or neuraxial anesthesia, according to 20 years of data from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. read more
Rapid Loss of Hemoglobin Compound May Deter Oxygen Delivery
ISSUE: AUGUST 2010
In an effort to better understand the increased risk from red blood cell transfusions for organ failure, heart attack, stroke and even death, North Carolina researchers have found that reduced levels of S-nitrosylated hemoglobin (SNO-Hb) may be a significant factor. read more
Cryospray Against Airway Tumors Leads to Unexpected Complications
ISSUE: AUGUST 2010
Spray cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen has been used effectively for ablating esophageal tumors. Some facilities even perform the technique in an outpatient setting under sedation. However, spray cryotherapy for treating advanced airway lesions—when other treatment options are limited—is more recent, and few reports of its effectiveness have been published (J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 2010;139:781-782). read more
Rewarmed Blood Linked to Complications After Cold Bypass
ISSUE: AUGUST 2010
Rewarming of blood after hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass appears to impair autoregulation of blood flow in the brain, increasing the patient’s risk for stroke in the process, researchers have found. read more
Anesthesiologists Mull New Guidelines on Thoracic Aortic Disease
ISSUE: JULY 2010
New clinical practice guidelines for diagnosing and managing patients with thoracic aortic disease are expected to have a significant impact on anesthesiologists. read more
APSF Urges Ways To Improve Med Safety in the OR
ISSUE: JULY 2010
In an attempt to improve patient safety in the operating room, a consensus conference convened by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation has produced a series of recommendations that could eventually alter how perioperative anesthesia is conducted. read more

A Brief Look at IARS 2010
ISSUE: JULY 2010
From analysis of current practice patterns regarding modified rapid sequence induction to novel ways of improving adherence to life support guidelines during cardiac arrest, there was no shortage of material to keep anesthesiologists interested at the 2010 annual meeting of the International Anesthesia Research Society. Here is a brief look at some of the findings presented at the conference, held in March in Honolulu. read more
Preventive Strategy To Reverse Cerebral Desaturation Includes Algorithm
ISSUE: JULY 2010
Serious complications can develop after surgery in patients who experience prolonged episodes of decreased oxygen to the brain during their procedures. And almost half of patients undergoing complex cardiac surgery experience a significant decline in cerebral oxygen saturation. However, according to a recent study, the use of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy and an interventional algorithm pioneered by Montreal clinicians reverses almost 90% of these cases. read more
