Preventive Strategy To Reverse Cerebral Desaturation Includes Algorithm

Serious complications can develop after surgery in patients who experience prolonged episodes of decreased oxygen to the brain during their procedures. And almost half of patients undergoing complex cardiac surgery experience a significant decline in cerebral oxygen saturation. However, according to a recent study, the use of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy and an interventional algorithm pioneered by Montreal clinicians reverses almost 90% of these cases. read more
Comorbidities Tied to Malignant Hyperthermia in Children

Mutations in the ryanodine receptor (RYR1) gene are recognized as the dominant genetic markers of malignant hyperthermia caused by anesthesia. However, only a small number of clinical phenotypes, such as central core disease, have been qualitatively linked to MH susceptibility. read more
Seeking the Final Word on LAST

A new practice advisory from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine seeks to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of local anesthetic systemic toxicity, or LAST. The advisory, published in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (2010;35:152-159) supplants the ASRA’s previous practice advisory on LAST, which was issued in 2001. read more
