Supraglottic Jet Oxygenation During Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Reduces Hypoxia With Propofol Sedation

Newport Beach, Calif.—Results of a recent study suggest that the use of supraglottic jet oxygenation and ventilation (SJOV) during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy can lower the risk for hypoxia in propofol-sedated patients.

Compared with administration of oxygen through a nasal cannula, SJOV through a nasal tube placed above the glottis significantly reduced the rate of hypoxia from 8.93% to 2.53% (P<0.0001). Moreover, data from the study of 1,781 patients showed only mild side effects
