Haptoglobin Lowers Risk for Post-Op Acute Kidney Injury In Cardiac Surgery Patients With Chronic Renal Impairment

San Diego—Given its prevalence after cardiac surgery—particularly in patients with chronic renal impairment—finding a way to curb postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI) stands to have a significant effect on patient outcomes. A Japanese research team seems to have taken a step in that direction; their study found that intraoperative administration of haptoglobin was independently associated with lower risk for postoperative AKI in these patients.
