Ultrasound for Frailty Assessment Explored

Orlando, Fla.—A pilot study indicates that anesthesiologists have another modality for measuring patient frailty in their armamentarium: point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).

Using this safe and noninvasive technology to measure the quantity and quality of quadriceps muscles correlated well with frailty. Furthermore, frailty measured by ultrasound was also found to accurately predict postoperative outcomes.
