Tranexamic Acid Greatly Reduces Blood Transfusions, Bleeding in Primary Total Knees

Vienna—The intra-articular administration of tranexamic acid (TXA) during unilateral primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) resulted in a 12-fold reduction in the blood transfusion rate and 30% less postoperative bleeding than the control group, according to researchers from Spain.

The retrospective study also found no meaningful side effects associated with the synthetic analog of lysine, which prevents plasminogen from converting into plasmin, thus decreasing fibrinolysis and bleeding.
