Blood Transfusion Associated With Increased Presence of Antibodies After Lung Transplantation

New research has confirmed the association between perioperative blood transfusion and development of new anti–human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies and donor-specific antibodies (DSAs) within the first year of lung transplantation in adults.

This relationship, the researchers said, implies a greater chance of postoperative complications, including chronic lung allograft dysfunction, among patients who undergo blood transfusion during lung transplantation.
