Despite the focus on drug shortages, the nationwide decline in available IV saline was one of the most daunting shortages in recent years. Hurricane Maria, which devastated islands throughout the Caribbean in September 2017, was the direct cause of that shortage, and the wake-up call to the realization that nearly all manufacturing facilities for saline bags were based in Puerto Rico.
