The crisis of drug shortages in the United States has been defined by debates about the need for better policy and medical practices, but at the center of the issue is the patient–provider relationship. These shortages have pushed many providers into an uncomfortable dilemma: whether or not to inform a patient of the problem and the changes to their care that are necessary to cope with it. It is not an easy decision to make, even for the simplest of procedures or therapies.
