Perioperative Lidocaine and Magnesium Decrease Opioid Consumption And Improve Pain Management

BOSTON—Administration of IV lidocaine and/or magnesium has demonstrated opioid-sparing effects while improving postoperative pain control, according to a systematic review of literature.

The critical analysis of 15 articles showed that the perioperative introduction of lidocaine and/or magnesium to an anesthetic pain regimen decreased patient pain levels and opioid consumption while increasing patient satisfaction.
