Community Hospitals Can Successfully Initiate ERAS Protocols to Reduce Morphine Use in Mastectomy Patients

Implementing enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols in community hospitals can lead to as much success as seen in larger academic settings.

Clinicians at Phelps Health Hospital, in Rolla, Mo., found that an ERAS protocol that included continuous erector spinae plane (ESP) blocks reduced opioid consumption by more than 50% in patients undergoing mastectomy, with no decrease in PACU pain scores.
