For TKA Patients, Use of Psychotropics Increases Consumption of Opioids

Las Vegas—Patient use of long-term anxiolytics or antidepressants is associated with increased opioid consumption and more consults with an acute pain service following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Interestingly, these relationships were found to exist independently of a medical diagnosis of anxiety or depression, findings the investigators said suggest more aggressive postoperative pain control among individuals who regularly consume these agents.
