McMahon Publishing was founded in 1972 by Raymond E. McMahon. An advertising sales executive at the time, he proposed creating a new publication focused on the medical professionals in the operating room, but his idea was rejected by his employers. That rejection was the impetus to start his own publishing company and his first publication, a bimonthly journal called Surgical Team. As members of the surgical team, anesthesiologists and surgeons have been a focus of the company from the very beginning.

The company started with just five staffers and was located in the McMahon family’s garage. Over the ensuing 44 years, the company has grown considerably, becoming one of the nation’s largest family-owned medical publishers today.
McMahon now publishes a broad array of medical newsmagazines for various specialties, including anesthesiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, health system and specialty pharmacy, infectious diseases, oncology and pain medicine. The combined circulation of McMahon publications is approximately 300,000 doctors and pharmacists.
Foremost among McMahon publications is Anesthesiology News, which was the second publication following the creation of Surgical Team. Now in its 42nd year, Anesthesiology News has been the best-read publication for the specialty for the past 19 years, according to Kantar Media, a third-party firm that is the established arbiter of readership trends in medical publishing. All 47,516 U.S.-based anesthesiologists receive a copy of Anesthesiology News every month.
Most of the other newsmagazines published by McMahon are also the best read in their specialties, as measured by Kantar Media.
In addition to print publications, McMahon Publishing has adapted to the ever-evolving media landscape with a full line of digital media, including mobile responsive websites, e-Newsletters, multimedia videos, podcasts and iPad apps.
McMahon’s Special Projects division develops educational content and custom publishing programs in conjunction with expert clinicians and researchers. This content is published exclusively via McMahon’s various print and digital channels.
