Chronic Post–Cardiac Surgery Pain More Likely in Diabetic Patients

Chicago—Patients with type 1 diabetes undergoing cardiac surgery who experience longer hospital stays are at increased risk for chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP).

CPSP is defined as pain continuing after surgery for more than three months, and occurs in 9.5% to 56% of cardiac procedures.
