Etomidate Linked to Increases in Negative Outcomes For Inflammation and Respiratory Function

Orlando, Fla.—Use of etomidate in trauma patients is associated with increased inflammatory response and worsening of respiratory function, according to a post-hoc data analysis of a large prospective study.

However, while the findings suggest that etomidate’s hemodynamic benefits may be compromised by this increased inflammatory profile, the researchers said the agent may still have a place in the trauma setting under the right circumstances.
