Pediatric Anesthesia May Affect Child Brain Development

Administering general anesthesia during infant surgery resulted in a decrease in the amount of white matter in the brain more than 10 years later, a small study has concluded.

“However, we cannot claim that the effects observed are associated specifically with anesthesia as opposed to surgery,” said lead author Robert Block, PhD, associate professor of anesthesia at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, in Iowa City.
