Study Finds Rocuronium Results in Shorter Intubation Onset Times in Older Patients

One Disadvantage Is Prolonged Duration of Action

When it comes to intubating patients who are at least 80 years of age, a 0.9-mg/kg dose of rocuronium results in shorter onset times than a 0.3-mg/kg dose of the neuromuscular blocking agent, according to the results of a new Danish study. The authors were quick to add, however, that the larger rocuronium dose also resulted in a longer duration of action.

“A number of drugs may act differently in older people,” said Lars S. Rasmussen,
