CMS Program Reduces Hospital Readmission Rates in 49 States

Federal efforts to curb readmissions using payment penalties appear to be paying off, with an 8% overall reduction in hospital readmissions since the program began in 2010, according to a recent announcement by Patrick Conway, MD, the chief medical officer of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
